Shannon Delany has done it again. With this stunning second book in the 13 To Life series, she made me fall in love with Russian werewolves all over again! Secrets and Shadows is definitely a fitting title for this book, because it is absolutely filled with them. It was a heart-pumping, thrill ride of a novel, her characters are strong, deep and are hiding more than meets the eye. Action and intrigue fills every page, I simply couldn't put this book down. The ending will leave you searching for more and your blood pumping in anticipation the next installment: Bargains and Betrayals.
Nothing is safe or normal in Jessie's life; but she wouldn't change anything if that meant she couldn't be with Pietr. For Jessie and Pietr, life becomes even more complicated as he tries to untangle himself from Sarah, the once queen-mean-girl of their high school, turned friend after an accident that left Jessie's mother dead. Suddenly Derek, a long-time crush of Jessie's (before she met Pietr), is paying way too much attention to her. After an accident leaves Jessie with visible bruises, her father wants all contact with Pietr to end--pushing Jessie into Derek's waiting arms. Strange things happen to Jessie when she is with Derek, she begins to lose memories of time spent alone with him and any plans the Rusakova's make to free their mother become thwarted with little chance of being successful. Danger surrounds them at every turn as more and more truths of the Rusakova family's heritage are revealed, and believing he is protecting Jessie, Pietr becomes closer to Sarah pushing Jessie away, making the twisted lies they have told even more complicated.
