Clarity by Kim Harrington

Clarity:
When you can see things others can't, where do you look for the truth?
This paranormal murder mystery will have teens reading on the edge of their seats.
Clarity "Clare" Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It's a gift.

And a curse.

When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare's ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case--but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare's brother--who has supernatural gifts of his own--becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?

This debut novel by Kim Harrington had me on the edge of my seat. Her characters were intriguing and well rounded. There were unexpected twists and turns that kept me guessing and turning pages until the very end. Clare has never hidden what she can do, and although this does not make her the most popular girl in school, she is comfortable with who she is. I felt Clare was a strong, independent character and enjoyed "getting to know her". A murder in their small town has the people in an uproar, and they are willing to do anything to catch the killer--even if that means using unconventional methods. Clare's ex-boyfriend, Justin, is the mayor's son and convinces the new police detective to use her psychic abilities. After being betrayed by Justin, Clare is sure she wants nothing more to do with him, but she can't stand by and do nothing when that poor girls' murderer is roaming free. Gabriel, the detective's son, is assigned to work alongside her and Justin. He is prejudiced against all those with (or "claiming") psychic abilities, but as the he and Clare become closer, Gabriel is having trouble disliking Clare's open, friendly personality. She becomes confused by her lingering feelings for Justin and her new crush on Gabriel, but as much as she wants to hurt Justin for how he hurt her, she finds that she just doesn't have it within herself to be cruel. Slowly her friendship and trust is rebuilt as Justin uses his father's connections to help with their investigation. Convinced her brother could never have killed the victim; Clare works diligently to remove her brother from the suspect list and wades ever deeper into danger as the trio gets closer to the killer.
