Released by Megan Duncan
Released:
After a demon apocalypse kills their parents and everyone they know, 17-year old Abby Phillips, her brother, Carter, and friend, Max flee their home to travel through what has become the wastelands of America. When radio transmissions of a resistance offering shelter and safety cease, Abby is tempted to give up. Struggling to overcome life-threatening obstacles in their dangerous journey, Abby and her companions quickly discover there are much worse things lurking in the dark than they could have ever imagined.
Megan Duncan is a new author on the young adult, paranormal scene, and with her debut: Released, she really grabbed my attention. Despite a few small grammatical errors, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Megan's narrative through Abby's eyes made it easy to visualize the broken and devastated world surrounding her characters. The only thing I would have liked to have was more of an explanation of where the demons came from, I will definitely be picking up the next book in this series in hopes of finding out more, and for Abby's continuing story. Abby is a strong character, that I really liked, who hides her fears from others until she learns that sometimes it is okay to lean on others. Full of action and adventure, I couldn't put this book down.
Abby and her brother, have recently lost the only parent they have left and Carters best friend, Max, is the only surviving member of his own family. Together they make their own family and decide to leave the safety of their home in search of finding others stationed at a far away military base. Right from the beginning their journey is fraught with danger; while obtaining supplies the trio must fight off a demon hound. After escaping by the skin of their teeth they soon come across a young girl, Taya, in distress. Never thinking twice about the danger to themselves they rescue her and continue their travels south. As tension fills the small enclosure of the car, Max and Abby's friendship is beginning to change, Abby no longer thinks of Max as a second older brother, but more of a handsome young man. And when Abby is attacked and severely injured by demons, Max can't hold back his true feelings any longer. Along the way they meet interesting characters, some good...some not so much, and after barely escaping with their lives once again, they reach the military base; only what they find there is not at all what they were expecting.
