Guest Post & Giveaway with Amber Polo

Have you ever noticed what most books leave out?

Authors try to leave out the boring parts and just move that story along. But do you ever wonder when your favorite characters manage to find some bathroom time, eat three healthy meals a day, and read? Does a sexy heroine ever turn to her lover and say, “Just let me finish this chapter.” Or does the hero in the midst of vanquishing a pack of villains sigh, “Can’t wait to go home and curl up with a good book.” For those of us who love books, sometimes it seems as if we’re reading about people who don’t read. Isn’t it a little intimidating to realize their lives may be exciting, but ours are – joyfully - filled with books.

When I started writing about a library I knew I wanted to make books a part of the story and part of the lives of my characters, but the books couldn’t be boring. Because my book takes place in a public library and the research library of an academy of dog-shifters, I wanted to namedrop some of the most beloved dog books of all time. And include more recent titles that were my special favorites. I threw in some doggie movies including my absolute favorite, Disney’s Shaggy Dog (the original version), and my second favorite Best in Show. Also as part of the plot dog books get stolen and three imaginary books solve major problems in the plot. My characters talk as if comparing things to books was pretty ordinary, take books home to read, and when they get into a discussion of fantasy, I get to mention favorites from childhood. And I admit I made up some book titles and stuck them in with real ones. There is no book called The Dog Hollerer or The Werewolf Lover’s Handbook by Ursala Dusha. But if there were, wouldn’t they be fun to read.

What books to do you think your favorite characters read in their spare time?
