Wednesday Random Recommendation (12)

The Face of Deception:
An unidentified skull...

A trail of terrifying secrets...

And a woman whose talented hands could reveal the shocking truth...

As a forensic sculptor, Eve Duncan helps identify the dead from their skulls. Her own daughter murdered and her body never found, the job is Eve's way of coming to terms with her personal nightmare. But more terror lies ahead when she accepts work from billionaire John Logan. Beneath her gifted hands a face emerges from the skull he has given her to reconstruct—a face no one was ever meant to see. Now Eve is trapped in a frightening web of murder and deceit. Powerful enemies are determined to cover up the truth, and they will make certain that truth goes to the grave...even if Eve gets buried with it.

First published in 1998, Iris Johansen's The Face of Deception has the first appearance of Eve Duncan, a forensics sculptor looking for her daughter, Bonnie, who was kidnapped years ago. Eve Duncan becomes an integral character in Iris's books and each book is better than the last.

I invite and welcome anyone interested in participating to post their own "Random Recommendation" (original post) on their blog (and include a link back to this blog) and join in the fun! Teaser Tuesdays (9)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly event hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Today's book: Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong

"On the way, we found the spot where I'd been attacked. I'd hoped that in wolf form, with my better nose, I might be able to get more clues as to what exactly had ambushed us. But while I could still smell it, the musky odor was so overwhelming it was like trying to pick apart the components of cheap cologne. My nose and brain revolted and could only process the overall stink...and wanted nothing to do with it." (Page 187)

Here is how it works:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2 or 3) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Remember to show the title & author, too, so that others can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Marjorie M Liu's A Wild Light

The new Maxine Kiss novel, available July 27, 2010, are you ready for the next adventure?

A Wild Light:
Obsidian shadows of the flesh…tattoos with hearts, minds, and dreams. By day, they are my armor. By night, they unwind from my body to take on forms of their own—demons of the flesh, turned into flesh.

For too long Maxine Kiss has felt an inexplicable darkness around her—a force she channels into hunting the demons bent on destroying the human race. But when she finds herself covered in blood and crouched beside her grandfather’s dead body with no memory of what happened or of the man she loves, Maxine begins to fear that the darkness has finally consumed her.

With blood on her hands and her sanity in question, Maxine must face the truth about who she really is and embrace the love of the only man who can help her—before she loses what she cares about most: her family.

Marjorie M. Liu is an attorney, and the New York Times bestselling author of short stories, novellas, and two ongoing series: Dirk & Steele novels of paranormal romance, and the Hunter Kiss urban fantasy series. She wrote NYX: No Way Home, X-23, and Black Widow, for Marvel Comics, and is co-writing the ongoing bestselling Dark Wolverine series. Liu divides her time between the beautiful state of Indiana, and Beijing/Shanghai, China. For a complete listing of all her work, please visit her website at: www.marjoriemliu.com

Praise for Marjorie M. Liu:

“This pivotal book in the Hunter Kiss series proves Liu’s dark side is a haunting place to be as she pushes Maxine to the brink as a sharp-witted, uncompromising defender, not immune to self-doubt but tempered and made stronger for it."—Booklist on A Wild Light

"One of the key mysteries of the Hunter Kiss novels has been the truth about Maxine Kiss' genetic heritage. Clues have been dropped, but in the third chapter of this amazing series, real answers are given. Liu's craftsmanship grows with each novel, but it is the emotional undertones tahat give this story its devastating kick. Truly on of the most darkly intense and spellbinding series in UF today! Every Liu book should be an auto buy!"—Romantic Times Top Pick on A Wild Light

“I adore the Hunter Kiss series! Marjorie Liu’s writing is both lyrical and action packed, which is a very rare combination.”—Angela Knight, New York Times bestselling author

“Readers of early Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, and the best thrillers out there should try Liu now and catch a rising star.”—Publishers Weekly

“Liu’s ability to deliver kick-butt action and characters whose humanity resonates, even when they’re anything but human, is a testament to her outstanding storytelling skills. Liu’s imagination is an amazing place to visit.”—Romantic Times (Top Pick) on Darkness Calls

Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson

Claire de Lune:
Torn between two destinies?

Claire is having the perfect sixteenth birthday. Her pool party is a big success, and gorgeous Matthew keeps chatting and flirting with her as if she's the only girl there. But that night, she discovers something that takes away all sense of normalcy: she's a werewolf.
As Claire is initiated into the pack of female werewolves, she must deal not only with her changing identity, but also with a rogue werewolf who is putting everyone she knows in danger. Claire's new life threatens her blossoming romance with Matthew, whose father is leading the werewolf hunt. Now burdened with a dark secret and pushing the boundaries of forbidden love, Claire is struggling to feel comfortable in either skin. With her lupine loyalty at odds with her human heart, she will make a choice that will change her forever?

Although I loved the story line of Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson, I found it to be a really slow read and most of the action took place at the end of the book. I really enjoyed the characters of both Matthew and Claire, but I had some real issues with Claire's mother, Marie. I know that some authors like to distance the parents from the teenagers to make the story more appealing, but in this case, it almost seemed as if Claire and Marie had no relationship at all. On Claire's sixteenth birthday Marie reveals to her that she is indeed a werewolf and that there are only female werewolves in the world. Claire begins to go through the changes involved with shifting for the first time; a process that takes three full moon cycles, but in that entire time Marie is not emotionally present for her daughter at all. Claire has questions and Marie continually brushes her aside saying only "When the time is right." What do you mean when the time is right? The right time would be now, when Claire is going through these changes. Their conversations, what little amount they did converse, really bothered me, Marie always talked at her daughter and never listened to what Claire had to say and paid little attention to Claire's suffering. The only real mother/daughter moments came close to the end of the book, when Claire had successfully shifted. I felt Marie couldn't bother paying any attention to her daughter until she was "worthy" of her heritage and being a full werewolf.

I did really enjoy Christine's werewolf lore and the fact that they are all women was different from anything I have read before. And the sweet romance between Claire and Matthew was a pleasure to read, he treated her with respect and I felt their relationship was realistic. Claire is forced to reveal her true self to Matthew--despite knowing that his father is the local zealot werewolf hunter--in order to save his life and his reaction at first was honest fear, but once he distances himself from her and had time to think about her revelation and how much Claire means to him, he returned to Claire with feelings of love and trust. I would definitely recommend this book to other werewolf lovers like myself.

Accidentally Dead by Dakota Cassidy
Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson
Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The book I'm reading now:

Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong:
The Alaskan wilderness is a harsh landscape in the best of conditions, but with a pack of rogue werewolves on the loose, it’s downright deadly.

Elena Michaels, the Pack’s chief enforcer, knows all too well the havoc “mutts” can wreak. When they hear of a series of gruesome maulings and murders outside Anchorage, she and her husband, Clay, journey to Alaska in the dead of winter in order to hunt down the dangerous werewolves. Trapped in this savage, untamed winter realm, she and Clay learn more about their own werewolf heritage than they bargained for, tapping a little more into the wild nature of the beast within. With Elena back in the starring role, this is the book Kelley Armstrong fans have been waiting for.

Kelley Armstrong's Waking the Witch

Available July 27, 2010, are you ready for the next installment of Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series?

Waking the Witch:
Golden girl of the supernatural world, orphaned daughter of a dark witch and a conniving sorcerer, Savannah Levine has nothing to lose and everything to prove on her first solo case as a paranormal investigator.

She’s got a wide arsenal of spells at her fingertips, many that only she knows.
She’s got a tough-as-nails attitude and an even sharper wit.
She’s got one problem though . . . no one thinks she can handle this on her own.

Savannah has the power . . . and she’s not afraid to use it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At twenty-one, Savannah Levine—orphaned daughter of a notorious dark witch and an equally notorious cutthroat sorcerer—considers herself a full-fledged member of the supernatural race that rules the Otherworld. The once rebellious teen has grown into a six-foot-tall, motorcycle-riding jaw-dropper with a full arsenal of spells that she’s not afraid to use when she gets caught in a bind. There’s only one small problem—her adoptive parents, Paige and Lucas, don’t always trust her. Of course, she’s given them plenty of reasons . . . but those are in the past. People can change, right?

When Paige and Lucas take off on a romantic vacation alone, leaving her in charge of their detective agency, Savannah is presented with a case that she can’t turn down, and one she can finally call her own. Recruited by another supernatural detective, she travels to Columbus, Washington, a small, almost shell of a town. Two troubled young women have been found in an abandoned warehouse, murdered. Now a third woman is dead, and darker forces seem to be at play.

Savannah feels certain she can handle the case, but with supernatural activity appearing at every turn, things quickly become more serious—and far more dangerous—than she realizes. Caught up in a web of lust, false identities, and lies, Savannah must summon strength from her depths, and fight like she’s never fought before.

Praise for Kelley Armstrong:

"Savannah is a gutsy, shrewd, and accomplished protagonist who will immediately capture the reader's allegiance. ..Readers new to the series will still be able to enjoy this delightful, fast-paced adventure without difficulty."—Library Journal on Waking the Witch

"Armstrong writes with page-turningly lucid prose and outfits her heroine with plenty of pluck, which she'll need to navigate the handful of handsome fellas who drop in for potential romancing.”—Booklist on Waking the Witch

“Armstrong skillfully juggles her twisty plot, weaving in characters from previous novels as she builds to a fast-paced conclusion." –Publishers Weekly on Waking the Witch

“There is never a slow moment . . . or a false line in Armstrong’s writing.” —Charlaine Harris, author of Dead and Gone and other books in the Sookie Stackhouse series

Dreamfever by Karen Marie Moning:
He has stolen her past, but MacKayla will never allow her sister's murderer to take her future. Yet even the uniquely gifted sidhe-seer is no match for the Lord Master, who has unleashed an insatiable sexual craving that consumes Mac's every thought-and thrusts her into the seductive realm of two very dangerous men, both of whom she desires but dares not trust.
As the enigmatic Jericho Barrons and the sensual Fae prince V"lane vie for her body and soul, as cryptic entries from her sister's diary mysteriously appear and the power of the Dark Book weaves its annihilating path through the city, Mac's greatest enemy delivers a final challenge...
It's an invitation Mac cannot refuse, one that sends her racing home to Georgia, where an even darker threat awaits. With her parents missing and the lives of her loved ones under siege, Mac is about to come face-to-face with a soul-shattering truth-about herself and her sister, about Jericho Barrons...and about the world she thought she knew.

Unraveled by Gena Showalter:
For once, sixteen-year-old Aden Stone has everything he’s ever wanted:

A home.

Friends.

The girl of his dreams.

Too bad he’s going to die...Since coming to Crossroads, Oklahoma, former outcast Aden Stone has been living the good life. Never mind that one of his best friends is a werewolf, his girlfriend is a vampire princess who hungers for his blood, and he’s supposed to be crowned Vampire King – while still a human! Well, kind of.

With four – oops, three now — human souls living inside his head, Aden has always been “different” himself. These souls can time travel, raise the dead, possess another’s mind, and, his least favorite these days, tell the future.

The forecast for Aden? A knife through the heart.

Because a war is brewing between the creatures of the dark, and Aden is somehow at the center of it all. But he isn’t about to lie down and accept his destiny without a fight. Not when his new friends have his back, not when Victoria has risked her own future to be with him, and not when he has a reason to live for the first time in his life...

Jealousy by Lili St. Crow:
Dru Anderson might finally be safe. She’s at the largest Schola on the continent, and beginning to learn what it means to be svetocha–half vampire, half human, and all deadly. If she survives her training, she will be able to take her place in the Order, holding back the vampires and protecting the oblivious normal people.

But a web of lies and betrayals is still closing around her, just when she thinks she can relax a little. Her mentor Christophe is missing, her almost-boyfriend is acting weird, and the bodyguards she’s been assigned seem to know much more than they should. And then there’s the vampire attacks, the strange nightly visits, and the looks everyone keeps giving her. As if she should know something.

Or as if she’s in danger.

Someone high up in the Order is a traitor. They want Dru dead–but first, they want to know what she remembers of the night her mother died. Dru doesn’t want to remember, but it looks like she might have to–especially since once Christophe returns, he’ll be on trial for his life. The only person who can save him is Dru.

The problem is, once she remembers everything, she may not want to…

Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Raised by Wolves:
Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, fifteen-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two.

But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return. Bryn becomes obsessed with getting her questions answered, and Chase is the only one who can provide the information she needs.

But in her drive to find the truth, will Bryn push too far beyond the constraints of the pack, forcing her to leave behind her friends, her family, and the identity that she's shaped?

Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a truly amazing werewolf tale about an incredibly strong human heroine. From the moment I started this book I couldn't put it down. The incredible dynamics of each character draws you in and doesn't let go until you reach the last page. And even then you are craving more! Told through Bryn's voice, you feel her admirable strength and need for survival against all odds. Every emotion is felt as if it were your own. Each moment she is in the presence of the Alpha, Callum, fighting for her independence to the heart wrenching introduction to Chase, a boy around her age that was unwillingly turned into a werewolf. It's in this moment that she learns of her Alpha's deception and the lie she had thought to be the truth--and it changes everything. Inexplicably drawn to Chase, she gains permission to visit with him and they form a bond unlike anything anyone has ever seen before, unleashing a sequence of events that lead to her leaving the Pack and fighting for more than just her own independence.

By the Way...

My son Caden turned 4 (OMG 4!) yesterday! Where has the time gone? He starts junior kindergarten this September! My baby's going to school!!!

Demon Princess: Reign Check by Michelle Rowen

Demon Princess: Reign Check:
Nikki Donovan has had a lot to deal with since learning she was half human, half demon. But things take a darker turn when Rhys, a gorgeous--but potentially dangerous--faery king enrolls at her high school to investigate Nikki's potential for fulfilling an apocalyptic prophecy. Nikki knows she'd never turn violent, and she certainly couldn't destroy the world...could she?
Of course, all Nikki really wants is to be reunited with Michael, a Shadow creature whose status as her personal servant is further complicated by their undeniable attraction to each other. Even though the rules of the Shadowlands strictly forbid their romance, Nikki is determined not to let Michael go. But when she is summoned to the Underworld to appear before a demon council, it will take all her courage--and perhaps a bit of demon-level strength--to get herself out again.

In the second book of the Demon Princess series by Michelle Rowen, I almost instantly fell in love with Rhys (the Faery king) and the vulnerabilities he tries to hide behind his arrogant, "tough guy" persona. We learn a lot about where his hatred for demons, and therefore Nikki, comes from when he confides in Nikki. And it seems that as hard as she tries to dislike Rhys, the more they get to know one another the more attraction between them builds. After a prophecy is revealed involving the both of them, Nikki is left more confused then ever and Rhys with strong feelings of denial. Nikki still has strong feelings for Michael, but when she learns her feelings have the potential harsh punishment of death for Michael, she pushes him away. Michael believes Nikki and stays away until he is sent to summon her to the council, where she learns the truth behind the death of Rhys' parents and the prophecy that has made everyone believe that she is a danger to everyone's survival. Conspiracy runs rampant and when Michael is arrested for using his powers to save Nikki from imminent death, she gains an unlikely ally, the daughter of the council leader, as she sets about rescuing him. Secrets about the little known powers of the Shadows are revealed as well as Nikki's true feelings for Michael. I can't wait to see what happens next with Nikki, Michael and Rhys!

Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead

Spirit Bound:
Dimitri gave Rose the ultimate choice. But she chose wrong…

After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s—and to her best friend, Lissa. It is nearly graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives beyond the Academy’s iron gates to begin. But Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri, and he's out there, somewhere.

She failed to kill him when she had the chance. And now her worst fears are about to come true. Dimitri has tasted her blood, and she knows in her heart that he is hunting her. And if Rose won't join him, he won't rest until he's silenced her...forever.

In the fifth book of the Vampire Academy books by Richelle Mead, Dimitri has followed Rose back to St. Vladimir’s and is just waiting for her to leave the protection of the grounds so he can finish what he started back in Siberia, either to turn her Strigoi or kill her. With a chance to save Dimitri's soul, Rose is willing to risk anything, and with the help of her friends conducts a prison break of their mortal enemy, Victor, the man that tortured her best friend, Lissa. He has access to another Spirit-user like Lissa, his brother, Robert, who had been rumored to have saved a Strigoi in the past. Dimitri finds Rose and her friends and stages an attack, giving Victor and Robert the perfect chance to escape. And after learning what they can from Victor's brother, it's not long before Lissa has to put that information into practice, she must be the one to pierce Dimitri's heart before infusing him with her healing light. I loved how much Adrian's character has grown; he's changed from the shallow person we first met into a genuinely loveable man. Rose as always kicked some major butt and has to face a really hard decision as to what her future might hold, and after being arrested for treason--she's not sure if she'll have a future at all.

Wednesday Random Recommendation (11)

Lair of the Lion:
THE BEAUTY
Impoverished aristocrat Isabella Vernaducci would defy death itself to rescue her imprisoned brother. Though fear formed a fist around her heart, she'd even brave the haunted, accursed lair of the lion - the menacing palazzo of legendary, lethal Don Nicolai DeMarco...
THE BEAST
Rumor said the powerful don could command the heavens, that the beast below did his bidding...and that he was doomed to destroy the woman he took as his wife. It was whispered he was not wholly human - as untamed as his tawny mane and slashing amber eyes.
THE BARGAIN
But Isabella met a man whose growl was velvet, purring heat, whose eyes held dark, all-consuming desire. And when the don commanded her to become his bride, she went willingly into his muscled arms, praying she'd save his tortured soul...not sacrifice her life...

First published in 2002, Lair of the Lion by Christine Feehan is a single title work and not connected with her Carpathian series. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tales, and in this book Christine has put her own twist on the tale that is both beautiful and sensual.

I invite and welcome anyone interested in participating to post their own "Random Recommendation" (original post) on their blog (and include a link back to this blog) and join in the fun! Some books might not be very recent reads, but I hope that just helps these (sometimes forgotten) books earn a spot on your own bookshelf!

Teaser Tuesdays (8)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly event hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Today's book: Accidentally Dead by Dakota Cassidy

"This was a WTF moment, fo sho. As in what the fuck was going on? Nina decided he was already riled enough. She'd clearly opened some wounds and poured salt on them. Letting go of the how and why of Greg's origins seemed wise at this point. Not that she was afraid of a good old-fashioned verbal spar or anything, but contrary to popular belief, she did know when to can it and... He. Was. A. Vampire. 'Nuff said. "Okay, so why don't you tell me how to find this chick?" (Page 154)

**GIVEAWAY** Signed Linger bookmark by Maggie Stiefvater

I'm too excited to save this until my In My Mailbox post on Sunday! Look what I got in the mail today!

Ok, all you Wolves of Mercy Falls fans out there, back in May I won an ARC of linger from Maggie Stiefvater, THANK YOU MAGGIE! And along with my book came a signed bookmark! Way back in April (I think) I won a signed bookmark identical to the one I got today, so I'd like to pass my extra one along to someone else that would appreciate it!

Since this is my very first giveaway, I'm going to keep it simple...just leave me a comment (with your email so I can contact the winner) on this post and on Friday June 25th I (with the help of Random.org) will choose a winner! I'll post the winner on Saturday morning. I'm sorry but this contest is open to Canadian and US addresses only!

I Want to Win an ARC of Veil of Shadows!

Shiloh Walker is having a contest for her fans to enjoy Veil of Shadows before it releases! How AWESOME is that?!

Veil of Shadows:
From an author known for her “romantic spine tinglers” comes the thrilling follow-up to Through the Veil, featuring a beautiful captain who’s lost her magic—and the stranger who will either be her great love, or her greatest enemy…
With demons running amok throughout the forests and mountains, a rebel army has been established to win back the land—and a new soldier has appeared out of nowhere to join them.
His name is Xan, and his past is a mystery to everyone, including Laisyn Caar—a beautiful captain in the rebel army—who is shocked by the powerful, all-consuming desire she feels in his presence.
But now isn’t the time for distraction. The future of her land—and of her people—is in her hands. On top of that, she’s been stripped of her magic—and without it she feels like part of her soul has been stolen away.
But when she discovers the dark secrets of Xan’s agenda, it will be up to her to determine whether the man she’s starting to love is a friend of her people—or a dreaded enemy…

What can I say that would make me worthy of an ARC? Well, my blog might be small, but it's backed by my love of reading, and an ARC would definitely mean an advanced review that would (hopefully) spread the word and entice other readers to pick up the book when it releases in September '10. And for those that haven't had the pleasure of reading Through the Veil, after a review of Veil of Shadows (if they are anything like me and like to read books in a series in order) then that first book in the series would be waaaaayyyyy too tempting to pass up!

Ok, so here are some basics of the contest:

- ARCs are basically an author’s promotional tool; the more creative you are in spreading the word is how the word about a new book gets out there! And that is what any author needs--word of mouth can go a long way!

- Leave your entry here at the blog…(although if your entry is in the form of some clever online ploy…just leave a link to it in comments-be creative, REMEMBER!) convince Shiloh that you can do mad things for me (ie: help spread the word about the book) if you get one of these ARCs. In lieu of that, amuse her or entertain her. Sometimes that’s even better. But either make Shiloh laugh/smile, or convince her you do awesome promo/word of mouth, etc, etc. And if you get a jump on that and show her awesome word-of-mouth love, hey…she's got no problem with that. Just make sure you link to it so she can find it.

(FYI, Shiloh does have one ARC she's setting aside solely for a random giveaway, so if you’re not overly creative or inclined to amuse/promote, she will have a contest for just that)

Don't forget to read Shiloh's contest DISCLAIMER!
