Put down your bags, pull up a chair and tell me a story!
One of my favorite books is a title I've had since I was about 13. Same book at that too. It's not that it's written phenomenally or the plot's all that fantastic. It's just so damn reminiscent of my favorite movie, The Lost Boys, that I just can't part with it. It's nestled itself into a corner of my cockle area and just won't leave. And I'm okay with that.
The book, SONG OF THE VAMPIRE by Carmen Adams, features two amateur vampire slayers, recruited begrudgingly, to stake out a summer beach/boardwalk scene for possible vampire activity. Unfortunately for one of the MCs she gets suckered into liking the band's lead singer, also lead vampire, and nearly gets her to go all the way, fang-wise. Between that premise and the beach and the fact that it's nondescript coastal California with the weird aunt and concerts and carnival food, it's all there, just dressed a little differently.
Call me nostalgic or just a total nerd. That's fine. But reading SONG OF THE VAMPIRE warms me from the inside like hardly anything else. It brings me back to a time when I was first discovering The Lost Boys, back to a time when I didn't have to worry about the world; I could just make up my own and live in it and that would be okay. It's really hard to let go of something like that and, quite frankly, I don't want to. It's my blankie, a security piece that gives me comfort. Second only to my love of The Lost Boys itself (which is pretty immense), I just can't get enough of this title. For all it's cheesiness, it's still my cheesiness.
