Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Infinity:
At fourteen, Nick Gautier thinks he knows everything about the world around him. Streetwise, tough and savvy, his quick sarcasm is the stuff of legends. . .until the night when his best friends try to kill him. Saved by a mysterious warrior who has more fighting skills than Chuck Norris, Nick is sucked into the realm of the Dark-Hunters: immortal vampire slayers who risk everything to save humanity.

Nick quickly learns that the human world is only a veil for a much larger and more dangerous one: a world where the captain of the football team is a werewolf and the girl he has a crush on goes out at night to stake the undead.

But before he can even learn the rules of this new world, his fellow students are turning into flesh eating zombies. And he's next on the menu.

As if starting high school isn't hard enough. . .now Nick has to hide his new friends from his mom, his chainsaw from the principal, and keep the zombies and the demon Simi from eating his brains, all without getting grounded or suspended. How in the world is he supposed to do that?

As a fan of the original, adult Dark-Hunter series, I didn’t know what to expect with this book, but Sherrilyn Kenyon did an amazing job introducing this realm into the young adult genre. Action-packed and filled with fun and interesting characters, this was a great book. But I didn’t really get fully involved with the story until nearly half-way through; when a twist made me go: “Oh my gods…that’s who the mysterious Ambrose is!” I really enjoyed seeing a different side of Nick, I have loved him since the day I met him, but now I have a better understanding of him. The sweet relationship between him and his mother is merely hinted at in the adult novels, but in this story I was given a complete picture, and it is part of what drives Nick to be better than his violent father. It was also great to see some of the characters I know and love make an appearance in this book, and I’m looking forward to more.

This entire book was shrouded with mystery and danger, and Nick is caught in the middle because he doesn’t know exactly why strange things are happening to him. All of a sudden zombies are attacking his schoolmates, but they aren’t your ordinary zombies. They are living people who have been changed not by magic, but by a video game (how’s that for irony). Different forces are all fighting for control of Nick and his undiscovered powers, and he’s being pulled in so many directions and the choices he makes will either change his future, or doom him for eternity.
