Lisa McMann is an incredibly talented and daring author; no one is safe in her world, where terrible old-town secrets emerge to haunt the younger generations. Cryer’s Cross grabbed my attention and pulled me in from the very first page. If I was only able to describe this book with one word, I would have to say: creepy. But, damn, is it a good creepy! This gripping horror story had me on the edge of my chair, my heart pounding, and reading long into the night simply because I could not put it down.
The romance is not what drives this book, but it is there underneath the surface and that made it all the more sweet. This story was driven by the main character Kendall, who is loosely based on the author’s own daughter. The male protagonist, Jacián, was the perfect catalyst Kendall needed to change her views on life. She believed she would never leave her small town, never have the opportunity to do more with her life than working the farm with her parents. But that all changed when tragedy strikes and Kendall is forced to face the truth that life will never be the same.
